Below are three examples of functional and structural expressions of training guidelines taken from the person-centred training text, Mearns (1997a: 208). FUNCTIONAL STRUCTURAL How does the course address the problems of trainees working with ‘difficult’ clients? Courses should build-in a system of client ‘assessment’ to protect trainees from difficult clients. Does the course effectively address the issue of the trainee’s personal maintenance and development during training? The course should require trainees to be in personal therapy during the training.
Within this orientation it is inevitable that the boundary between ‘supervision’ and ‘therapy’ is more challenged than would be the case in approaches to supervision which favour the client more as the unit of study. Furthermore, with the emphasis of the approach on following the needs and directions of the supervisee it was common, in early person-centred supervision, to find that individual supervision sessions, or a whole series of sessions, became indistinguishable from therapy. Where the supervisee could determine the agenda without limits being imposed they tended to put their need for therapy before their need for supervision.
In this respect we are also encouraged by the knowledge that, towards the end of his life, Carl Rogers, the originator of our approach, was urgently concerned for the peace and preservation of the world and believed that when he could be fully present to another person, simply his presence was a healing force and gave access to resources which, almost despite himself, he described as ‘spiritual’, ‘mystical’, ‘transcendental’ (Rogers, 1986). This is the inheritance to which we wish to remain faithful even if the thought of the cost we may have to pay for such fidelity sometimes makes us tremble.
